A foundational monograph of modern Kartvelian phonetics and phonology by Sergi Zhgenti, who served as pro-rector for science at Tbilisi State University from 1950 to 1962 and is credited with introducing experimental instrumental methods — kymography and early spectrographic analysis, richly illustrated throughout this volume — into the study of Georgian and the other Kartvelian languages. Zhgenti's research established the accentual and rhythmic structure of literary Georgian and laid the groundwork for the field of speech therapy (logopedics) in Georgia. Alongside Giorgi Akhvlediani's contemporaneous work, "Phonetics of the Georgian Language" (1956) remains one of the two cornerstone twentieth-century studies of Georgian phonetics, still cited in current Kartvelological and dialectological scholarship, including studies of Gurian and other regional dialects. The volume documents experimental data through numerous reproduced kymograph tracings analyzing consonant and vowel articulation, syllable structure, and sonority.
