The Russian translation of Bartel Leendert van der Waerden's "Moderne Algebra," one of the most influential mathematics textbooks of the twentieth century and the book that established the modern axiomatic, structural approach to algebra as the standard worldwide. First published in German in 1930-31, the work grew directly out of lecture courses given by Emmy Noether at Gottingen and Emil Artin at Hamburg, whom van der Waerden credited explicitly, and it was the vehicle through which the abstract theory of groups, rings, fields, and ideals developed by the Noether-Artin circle became the common language of algebra for subsequent generations of mathematicians internationally. The present Soviet edition combines a translation of the eighth German edition of "Algebra I" (Springer, 1971) and the fifth edition of "Algebra II" (Springer, 1967) into a single volume, covering sets and mappings, group theory, rings, fields and ideals, extending through Galois theory and the more specialized topics of the second volume. The translation was edited by Yuri Ivanovich Merzlyakov, a prominent Soviet algebraist of the Novosibirsk school associated with Anatoly Malcev, known for his work on linear groups and algorithmic problems in group theory, whose editorial oversight situates the edition within the broader Soviet program of making foundational Western algebraic texts available in Russian. Van der Waerden's book remains, more than nine decades after its first appearance, a standard reference cited in the training of every professional algebraist.
