Georgy Tushkan (1905-1965) was born in Poltava, trained as an agronomist and worked for years in Central Asia, including the Pamirs, and became known in Russia for adventure fiction. Dzhura is his best-known novel. It first appeared in the magazine Pioneer in 1937 under the title Dzhura and Teke, with the author credited as Yu. Tushkan, and came out as a book in 1940; an English translation, The Hunter of the Pamirs, followed in 1944. The hero is a young hunter from a remote mountain village in the Pamirs who meets Soviet representatives, travels to Soviet Kyrgyzstan and, through clashes with bandits and basmachi raiders, grows from a self-interested trapper into a committed fighter. The story brings in a border commander nicknamed Thousand-Eyed and British-linked intrigue, and it was filmed twice, in 1964 and in 1987. This copy is the revised and enlarged edition of 1953, so it is not a first edition, but it carries the author's reworked text and belongs to the opening years of the Library of Adventure, the Detgiz series that the series bibliography treats as the first stage of the Library of Adventure and Science Fiction (BPiNF). The same bibliography records this title as number 3, which makes it one of the earliest volumes of a run that collectors pursue by number. The drawings are by I. Neznaykin, who also made the cover, and the print run was 75,000 copies, so the book is a common one and its appeal lies in the early series position, the illustrated Soviet frontier setting and the period binding. It suits collectors of Soviet adventure literature, readers interested in Central Asia and the Pamirs as seen from Moscow in the Stalin years, and those assembling the early numbers of the series.
