A standard textbook and reader of Modern Assyrian (Neo-Aramaic), the vernacular of the Assyrian Christian communities descended from the Urmia dialect tradition, by Konstantin G. Tsereteli (1921-2004), the foremost Georgian Semitist of the Soviet period and a founding figure of modern Neo-Aramaic dialectology. Issued as the fourth volume in the "Works of the Department of Semitology" series at Tbilisi State University, founded by the great Georgian Arabist and Semitist Academician Giorgi Tsereteli, the book presents a substantial body of connected Modern Assyrian prose, printed in the original Nestorian Syriac script, together with a Russian dictionary-commentary noting etymology and grammatical forms. As such it is one of the relatively few Soviet-era printed compilations of extended Modern Assyrian texts in the original script, rather than a grammar or wordlist alone, and preserves folk-narrative material alongside pedagogical exercises. The preface traces the emergence of literary Modern Assyrian in the 1840s from the Urmia dialect and notes the substantial body of Assyrian-language literature, including school textbooks, produced from 1926 onward in Soviet centers of the Assyrian diaspora, notably Moscow and Tbilisi. The first edition (1958) was awarded Tbilisi State University's First Prize. A key resource for Semitists, Neo-Aramaic and Syriac-script specialists, and historians of the Assyrian diaspora in the Caucasus and the wider Soviet Union.
