Varlam Topuria (1900–1966) was a preeminent Georgian linguist, a leading specialist in Kartvelian (South Caucasian) languages, particularly Svan. He was a professor at Tbilisi State University and a key researcher at the Institute of Linguistics of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, making fundamental contributions to the descriptive and historical study of the Svan language and Georgian dialectology.
This is the first volume of the collected works of the distinguished Georgian linguist Varlam Topuria, published posthumously in 1967. Dedicated entirely to the Svan language, this volume focuses on one of its most complex grammatical categories: the verb. It represents a foundational text for Svan and Kartvelian linguistics, offering a deep, systematic analysis of Svan verbal morphology, which is crucial for understanding the historical development of the entire Kartvelian language family.
