Переплеты - очень хорошее: единообразные владельческие, крепкие, без значительного износа. Блоки - хорошее: в т. 2, 15, 24 редкие подчеркивания карандашом; в т. 3 и 9 локальная реставрация страниц бумажными полосками; в т. 5 и 7 фоксинги и пятна (чернильное на с. 53 в т.5); в т. 6, 8, 10 легкие загрязнения страниц и владельческие пометы.

Bindings very good: uniform custom cloth, firm, with minimal wear. Text blocks good: vols. 2, 15, 24 have sparse pencil underlining; vols. 3 and 9 have localized paper restoration; vols. 5 and 7 show foxing and spots (ink spot on p. 53 of vol. 5); vols. 6, 8, 10 exhibit minor soiling and marginalia.

The first complete posthumous edition of the works of Leo Tolstoy, compiled and edited by his close friend, disciple, and official biographer Pavel Biryukov. Issued as a supplement to the immensely popular journal "Russkoe Slovo" by Ivan Sytin, the largest publishing magnate of pre-revolutionary Russia, this 1913 edition was a monumental undertaking designed to present Tolstoy's entire literary, philosophical, and pedagogical legacy to the Russian public shortly after his death in 1910. While Sytin's editions were printed in significant numbers, the survival of nearly complete sets in robust, handsome uniform custom bindings is uncommon. A particular bibliophilic charm of this set is the preservation of the original art-nouveau publisher's wrappers bound within the volumes, featuring a profile portrait of the author. Although volumes 19 and 20 are lacking from the original 24-volume run, this substantial 9-book set spanning 22 volumes remains a striking piece of Russian literary history and an excellent display set for collectors of Silver Age publishing.
