The first and only complete single-volume edition of the diary of Count Ivan Ivanovich Tolstoy (1858-1916), the eminent numismatist, archaeologist, and statesman who served as Vice President of the Imperial Academy of Arts, Imperial Minister of Public Education in the Witte government (1905-1906), and, most notably, as St. Petersburg City Governor (gorodskoi golova) in 1913-1916. An honorary member of both the Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Arts, Tolstoy was the foremost Russian specialist in Byzantine and early medieval Russian numismatics; his collection of coins and antiquities is preserved in the Hermitage Museum. The diary, covering September 1906 to April 1916 - the final decade of his life, ending with his death in April 1916 - constitutes a primary eyewitness source of exceptional value for the history of St. Petersburg (Petrograd) and Russian politics in the critical years of the late Stolypin era, the First World War, and the approach of the Revolution. The subjects recorded are unusually wide: interactions with leading scholars, artists, academicians, and state officials; Tolstoy's views on the State Duma, government policy, and Russia's overall situation; the inner workings of the city administration of the imperial capital during the war years 1913-1916; and the cultural and social life of the Petersburg intelligentsia. Published by L.I. Tolstaia, this is volume III of the series "Diaries and Reminiscences of Petersburg Scholars" issued by Evropeysky Dom (European House) in association with the European University at St. Petersburg. The editorial board includes Boris Vasilievich Anan'ich, the foremost historian of Russian pre-revolutionary state finance and a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Andrey Aleksandrovich Fursenko, historian and later Russian Minister of Education (2004-2012), ensuring the scholarly standing of the edition. A 2-volume reprint by Liki Rossii appeared later; this 1997 Evropeysky Dom edition is the editio princeps.
