A pair of conference proceedings from the Soviet Union's premier recurring forum for mathematical logic, hosted by the Novosibirsk Institute of Mathematics. The third conference (1974) opens with a paper by V. N. Agafonov of Novosibirsk on bounded m-reducibility, a contribution to the study of algorithmic complexity degrees within computability theory. The fifth conference (1979) is of particular documentary interest as an explicit tribute to Anatoly Maltsev on the seventieth anniversary of his birth, ten years before the larger international conference held in his memory in 1989 (see companion lot). Its organizing committee unites the core of the Novosibirsk logic school established in this collection's other volumes -- Yuri Ershov as chairman, with Sergei Goncharov, Igor Lavrov, Evgeny Palyutin, and Dmitry Smirnov -- alongside major figures of Soviet discrete mathematics and cybernetics from Moscow: Sergei Adian, who with Pyotr Novikov resolved the restricted Burnside problem for large exponents, Oleg Lupanov, and Sergei Yablonsky. Together the two volumes trace the continuity of Soviet mathematical logic conferences across the 1970s, from the founding generation's ongoing work through to the explicit commemorations of Maltsev that would culminate in the major 1989 international gathering.
