The volume is edited by three of the foremost figures of the Moscow-Tartu semiotic school, Vyacheslav Vs. Ivanov, Vladimir N. Toporov, and Boris A. Uspensky, and gathers contributions by the leading Siberianists of the day: E. A. Kreinovich on the Ket bear feast, riddles, and a legend of battle with the Jurak-Samoyeds; E. A. Alekseenko on Ket reindeer breeding; A. P. Dulson on Ket tales; Ivanov and Toporov on the structure of Ket mythology; and Ket songs and other texts prepared by Ivanov, Toporov, Uspensky, Segal, Tsivyan, and Moloshnaya, with translations and commentary. It closes with V. N. Toporov's extensive annotated bibliography of the Ket language. Issued by Nauka in a small print run of 1,300 copies, the book is a standard reference for the study of the Kets and is of strong interest to linguists working on Yeniseian and the Dene-Yeniseian hypothesis, ethnographers of Siberia, folklorists, and collectors of Soviet structuralist and semiotic scholarship.
