A primary source publication of the first complete scholarly edition of the History of the City of Sol Vychegodskaya, composed in 1789 by Aleksei Ivanovich Soskin (1761-1822), a native townsman and member-ratman of the Solvychegodsk city magistrate - the first historian of Solvychegodsk. The text is published in full from the autograph manuscript preserved at the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg (call number Q.IV.403). Previous printings - in excerpts in the Vologda gubernia and eparchial news publications of 1842, 1881, and 1882 - were incomplete; this 1997 Syktyvkar edition is the editio princeps of the complete autograph text. Soskin compiled his history in 1789 from local archival sources including the Solvychegodsk Chronicle, the Ustyug Chronicle, land survey books (pistsovye knigi), ancient charters, and oral traditions, and dedicated the manuscript to a member of Catherine II's Legislative Commission. The eleven chapters cover the legendary pre-history of the settlement (the cities of Chernigov and Vybor), the founding of the salt-mining center and the origins of the Stroganov merchant dynasty, trade and crafts, military history (raids by Poles, Voguls, and others), social structure and tax history, the town fortifications and heraldry, churches and monasteries including the Koryazhma Nikolaevsky Monastery, and the life of the holy fool Ivan Samsonovich; a supplement extends the chronicle to 1794. The text is edited by Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Amosov (1941-2001), Doctor of Historical Sciences and the leading Soviet and Russian specialist in medieval Russian manuscripts, a researcher at the Pushkin House (Institute of Russian Literature, Russian Academy of Sciences). The publication was intended to open a planned series "Monuments of Russian Provincial Historiography" initiated by Amosov; his death in 2001 appears to have ended the series at this inaugural volume, making this book a still more singular publication. With a print run of only 300 copies and distribution limited to regional and specialist libraries, this is a primary source of direct scholarly importance for researchers in the history of Muscovite commerce, the Stroganov dynasty, and the Russian North.
