A specialised archaeological monograph by Otar Semenovich Gambashidze on the Tkhmori treasure hoard discovered in the village of Tkhmori in the Ambrolauri district of Racha, one of the principal mountainous regions of western Georgia and a zone of particularly rich archaeological and ethnographic heritage. Issued under the editorial supervision of Giorgi Gobejishvili (the leading authority on Bronze Age Georgian archaeology of his generation) and under the imprint of the Iv. Javakhishvili Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR — the leading Georgian institutional centre for historical and archaeological research, founded in 1936 and named after the great Georgian historian Ivane Javakhishvili — the volume forms part of the substantive output of Soviet-Georgian archaeology on the prehistoric and ancient material culture of the Caucasus. Gambashidze, a long-time researcher at the Javakhishvili Institute specialising in the archaeology of western Georgia, presents the systematic publication of the Tkhmori find: its individual artefacts (with their detailed catalogue), their typological and stylistic analysis, their chronological position, and their broader implications for the prehistoric and proto-historic archaeology of western Georgia and the South Caucasus, accompanied by six plates of illustrations. A particular strength of the volume is the substantial comparative-chronological table at the end, in which the Tkhmori material is correlated with established Caucasian sequences (the Kobani culture and other Northern Caucasian assemblages) and with Northern and Eastern European parallels drawn from Finnish (Muinaismuistoyhdistyksen), Estonian and German Völkerkunde scholarship, placing the Georgian find in its broader Eurasian comparative archaeological context.
