Gia Nadareishvili (1921-1991) was the pre-eminent Soviet Georgian chess study composer and one of the most celebrated endgame study composers in the history of chess. Born in Tbilisi, by profession a neurologist and head of the neurology department at Tbilisi Central Hospital, he pursued chess composition throughout his adult life, producing approximately 500 endgame studies. He won 21 first prizes, 25 second prizes, and 20 third prizes in international composition tourneys. In 1969 he was awarded the title of International Master of Chess Composition by FIDE, and in 1980 the title of FIDE Grandmaster for Chess Composition - the highest distinction in the field. He was co-founder, with John Roycroft and others, of the Permanent Commission for Chess Composition (PCCC) within FIDE, and served as the USSR delegate to annual PCCC meetings until his death. He was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of Georgia. The present volume, published by Nakaduli in 1965, is a major collection of his studies with a trilingual title page and presentation in Georgian, Russian, and English - a format explicitly designed for international chess composition readership. The dust jacket, designed by E. Amashukeli, is a three-color constructivist composition that represents Soviet Georgian chess book design at its most striking: the bold knight silhouette against a red and cream ground, with the Mkhedruli title set in a calligraphic brush script, is an immediately recognizable piece of 1960s Soviet sports book graphic art. The presentation inscription dated November 1965 - signed with the author's initial and surname in his own hand - makes this a documented authorial association copy of one of the most important books by Georgia's and the Soviet Union's greatest chess study composer.
