The first edition of the standard Soviet professional reference for the wine industry - a comprehensive technical handbook covering raw materials, equipment, microbiology, chemistry, and techno-chemical quality control for the production of wine, champagne, and cognac, compiled for engineers, technicians, and production foremen across the Soviet winemaking industry. Co-edited by Vasily Markovich Maltabar and Emmanuil Moiseevich Shprizman, the volume drew on a substantial author collective covering cognac technology, refrigeration engineering for wineries, and equipment specifications, remaining the reference standard of the field until superseded by a revised edition under Georgy Valuyko's general editorship in 2000. Maltabar, trained within Vasily Nilov's Magarach school of Soviet wine chemistry, was co-author of the standard Soviet monograph "Tekhnologiya konyaka" (Technology of Cognac, 1959) and a recognized specialist in cognac and wine technology across the Soviet wine-producing republics. This copy carries the particular interest of a presentation inscription in Maltabar's own hand: on the front free endpaper, in blue ink, he inscribed the volume "for the good and lasting memory of my beloved and dear friend Rezo, from Vasily Maltabar," dated 1973 and signed at Tbilisi - a warm personal dedication from one of the book's own editors, evidencing the close professional and personal ties linking Soviet oenological specialists across Russia, Georgia, and the wider Caucasus wine industry.
