Eduard Yefimovich Gufeld (1936-2002) was a Soviet, later American, chess grandmaster (1967), five-time champion of the Georgian SSR, and one of the most prolific and colorful chess writers of the late Soviet period, based for most of his career in Tbilisi. This biography of Garry Kasparov, published in 1987 - the year after Kasparov's second successful title defense against Anatoly Karpov and shortly before their fourth match, in Seville - was among the earliest book-length Soviet accounts of the career of the youngest world chess champion in history. Drawing on his own standing within Georgian and Soviet chess circles, Gufeld traces Kasparov's rise from a five-year-old prodigy who astonished his parents by reciting the board from memory, through his early tournament career, to his historic 1985 title victory over Karpov and their ongoing rivalry, whose match record stood at 50:49 in Kasparov's favor at time of writing. The book includes roughly fifty annotated games with the author's own commentary, a table of Kasparov's tournament results, and an index of opponents, alongside eight leaves of photographic plates. Issued by the Georgian publishing house "Ganatleba" in a run of 20,000 copies, it remains a primary early source on Kasparov's formative years, written by a grandmaster contemporary with direct knowledge of the Soviet chess establishment that produced him. This copy is inscribed by Gufeld himself on the title page in Tbilisi, dated within weeks of the book's approval for print - a genuine author's presentation copy from a widely translated grandmaster-writer of the late Soviet era.
