A scarce ethnographic monograph on the traditional agrarian calendar of the Ossetians, the Iranian-speaking people of the central Caucasus descended from the medieval Alans, by the scholar who would later become the first head of state of South Ossetia. Ludvig Alekseevich Chibirov, born in Tskhinvali in 1932, was among the leading ethnographers of the Ossetian people, author of more than 160 scholarly works in Russian and Ossetian and later rector of the South Ossetian State Pedagogical Institute; he went on to serve as Chairman of the Supreme Council from 1993 and as the first President of the Republic of South Ossetia from 1996 to 2001, signing with Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze the Moscow memorandum on security and mutual confidence. The present study reconstructs the pre-Christian agricultural year of the Ossetian highlanders through its winter, spring, and autumn cycles, examining the origins of the Ossetian names for days and months, the reckoning of the calendar itself, and the ritual complex attached to each season, from the midwinter Tsyppurs to the festivals of Tutyr, Uatsilla, Uastyrdzhi, and Khetag. Chibirov's central argument concerns the genesis of Ossetian agrarian religion as a stratified system in which a deep layer of Iranian and local pre-Christian cult persisted beneath a Christian nomenclature, documented from living informants whose names are listed in the appendix. Issued by the small regional Iryston press in a run of only 2,000 copies and never widely distributed beyond the Caucasus, the book is uncommon outside specialist library holdings. This copy carries the author's own presentation inscription in Georgian, dated October 1976, made while South Ossetia was still an autonomous oblast within the Georgian SSR and two decades before the political career that would define his public life, giving it a documentary interest well beyond that of an ordinary signed academic monograph.
