The first volume of E. Rogava's specialised study of Kartvelian historical phonology, devoted specifically to the comparative-historical analysis of the vocalic system across the Kartvelian language family — the reconstructed Proto-Kartvelian vowel inventory, the systems of vowel alternation, vowel correspondences and divergences as attested in Georgian, Megrelian, Laz and Svan, and the historical pathways by which the modern systems developed from the proto-language. Issued under the imprint of the Institute of Linguistics of the Georgian Academy of Sciences and edited by Arnold Chikobava (1898–1985), the founding director of the Institute and the dominant figure of twentieth-century Caucasian comparative linguistics, the volume forms part of the broader Soviet-Georgian programme to reconstruct the prehistory of Kartvelian on a rigorous philological and comparative basis — a programme that culminated in the work of Tamaz Gamkrelidze and Givi Machavariani in the following decade. The work was issued by the Academy press in a print run of only 1,000 copies, distributed primarily through institutional academic exchange and to the small specialist Kartvelological community, which renders the book genuinely scarce on the international market today. The presence of the author's presentation inscription, dated to the year of publication, makes the present copy an association item of particular interest to specialists in Kartvelian historical phonology, to historians of Soviet-period Caucasian linguistics, and to collectors of inscribed academic-press monographs.
