A scarce presentation copy of a foundational Soviet-era textbook in general topology, signed by the author within months of publication. Altai Asylkanovich Borubaev, who had defended his candidate dissertation in Tbilisi in 1977 under V. D. Fedorov, one of the present volume's two reviewers, was at the time a lecturer and later head of the department of algebra and geometry at Kirghiz State University; the theory developed here formed the direct basis of his 1991 doctoral dissertation at Moscow State University on uniform spaces and uniformly continuous mappings. The book, as its own introduction states, offers the first detailed Russian-language exposition of the theory of uniform spaces in terms of coverings rather than the entourage (surroundings) approach standard in earlier Russian textbooks, situating the subject within the tradition established by André Weil's original 1937 axiomatisation and subsequently developed by Bourbaki, Yuri Smirnov, John Isbell, and Zdeněk Frolík. The nine sections progress from coverings and metric spaces through uniform and pseudo-uniform structures, uniformly continuous mappings and operations on uniform spaces, metrization, completeness and completion, total boundedness and precompactness, to factorization, dimension theory, and universal spaces, concluding with a bibliography and subject index. Issued in a modest run of 500 copies for university instructional use, the pamphlet is scarce even institutionally; as an association copy inscribed by the author to a valued colleague at the very outset of its circulation, it is of particular interest to historians of Soviet Central Asian mathematics and collectors of general topology.
