A solid late-imperial primer in music theory issued under the prestigious Brockhaus-Efron «Library of Self-Education» — a flagship enterprise of Russian popular education that, between 1894 and the First World War, brought university-level surveys in the humanities and sciences to a mass readership. The volume was edited by Liveriy (Livio) Antonovich Sakketti (1852–1916), the Italian-born musicologist and longtime professor of music history and aesthetics at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and compiled by Alexei Ivanovich Puzyrevsky (1855–1917), historian of Russian music, inspector of the Conservatory, and one of the principal Russian writers on the development of national musical institutions. Their joint manual moves systematically from the elements of notation, scales and intervals, through harmony and counterpoint, into musical forms and the foundations of orchestration, illustrated by hundreds of engraved examples — an unusually thorough single-volume conspectus for its date and intended audience. The present copy is rendered particularly distinctive by the gilt cover title in Esperanto, «Teorio de Muziko»: almost certainly the device of an early-twentieth-century Russian Esperantist owner who had the book privately rebound or restamped, a small but vivid trace of the broad linguistic-utopian movement that flourished in Russia in the years before 1917.
