Published in 1995 by the Russian Institute of Culturology, this specialized academic collection explores the historical, spatial, and socio-cultural evolution of diverse rural settlements in Russia from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. Moving beyond the traditional scope of agricultural villages, the book provides a comprehensive typology of rural environments. It features detailed scholarly articles on monastic settlements, trade and fair villages, military colonies, industrial and artistic-craft communities, and the emergence of dacha (summer house) settlements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The front cover is illustrated with a 1975 sketch by the editor, O. G. Sevan, depicting traditional wooden architecture in the village of Palashchelye, Arkhangelsk region. Academic publications from Russia during the transitional mid-1990s typically suffered from severely limited print runs and poor distribution (the colophon of this copy notably leaves the print run blank), making this a scarce and valuable resource for historians, architects, and sociologists studying Russian rural heritage and cultural landscapes.
