This is a large source reader for the study of the ancient Near and Far East, issued in 1963 by the Publishing House of Oriental Literature under the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and prepared at the Institute of the Peoples of Asia. It was edited by Academician Vasily Vasilievich Struve (1889-1965), the founder of the Soviet school of ancient Near Eastern history, together with the historian Dmitry Grigorievich Reder. The volume brings together documents in Russian translation by leading Soviet orientalists, from Egypt, Mesopotamia, Asia Minor and Iran to India and China; the Chinese section alone offers bronze inscriptions, excerpts from the Guoyu, the Zuo zhuan, the Analects, Laozi, Sun Tzu, Mozi and Zhuangzi, passages of Sima Qian's Historical Records, and the histories of the Former and Later Han, in translations by L. D. Pozdneeva, N. I. Konrad, V. M. Alekseev, E. M. Yanshina, L. S. Perelomov and others. The volume closes with a dictionary of personal names, geographical names and socio-economic terms, and a table of measures of the ancient East. Published in a print run of 9,000 copies and issued with an errata slip, it served for decades as a standard teaching and reference anthology in Soviet universities. It will interest historians and collectors of Soviet orientalist scholarship, students of ancient history, and libraries building collections of ancient Near Eastern, Chinese and Indian source material.
