A substantial monograph by Lev Vyacheslavovich Razumov of the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, applying quantitative methods to the analysis of social stratification among the peasantry of the Central Industrial Region of European Russia - encompassing the provinces of Smolensk, Kaluga, Tver, Kostroma, Nizhny Novgorod, Yaroslavl, Moscow, and Vladimir - in the decades preceding the First World War. The Central Industrial Region occupied a distinctive position in the Russian rural economy, being characterized by the dense interpenetration of agricultural and non-agricultural peasant livelihoods: migrant labor, cottage industry (kustar), and factory employment coexisted with subsistence and commercial farming. The stratification of this peasant population into property and income groups was a central question in the late Imperial political and economic debates between Populists and Marxists concerning the degree to which capitalist differentiation had transformed Russian village society. Razumov's study brings zemstvo household census data and zemstvo statistical publications to bear on this debate through systematic quantitative analysis at the uezd and volost level, covering in turn the agricultural provinces of Smolensk, Kaluga, Tver, and Kostroma, and the more industrialized provinces of Nizhny Novgorod, Yaroslavl, Moscow, and Vladimir. The fifth chapter presents a comparative structural analysis of peasant household groupings across the full region. The volume is accompanied by forty-eight pages of statistical appendix tables. Printed in-house at the Institute of Russian History press in an edition of 300 copies without commercial distribution.
