Плеханов, Г.В.

Plekhanov, Georgy V. Our Differences.
St. Petersburg: "Novyi Mir" Book Publishers, 1906. 309, [3] pp. Small (pocket) format.
First legal printing in Russia (the true first edition was published illegally in Geneva by the press of the "Emancipation of Labor" group in 1884, dated 1885 on the wrapper, and smuggled into Russia through underground channels).
Contemporary composite owner's binding: pebble-grained black boards with a thin tan leather spine laid on.
Binding fair: leather spine extensively worn and flaking away along its whole length, especially at head and tail. Text block good: pages clean, lightly toned, text complete.

Georgy Valentinovich Plekhanov (1856-1918) is generally regarded as the father of Russian Marxism: together with Pavel Axelrod, Vera Zasulich, and Lev Deich, he founded in Geneva in 1883 the "Emancipation of Labor" group, the first organization to apply Marxist theory systematically to Russian conditions, and he later became a founding figure of the Russian Social-Democratic Labor Party and its newspaper "Iskra." "Our Differences," a direct polemical sequel to his 1883 "Socialism and the Political Struggle," is his fullest statement of the Marxist case against Russian Narodism: working through the legacies of Herzen, Chernyshevsky, Bakunin, and Tkachev, and engaging at length with the contemporary Narodnaya Volya theorist Lev Tikhomirov, Plekhanov marshalled economic statistics to argue that capitalism was already transforming the Russian countryside and factory system, that the peasant commune could not serve as a ready-made vehicle for socialism, and that the industrial proletariat, not the peasantry, would have to drive the coming Russian revolution. The book is widely regarded as the starting point of the Russian Social-Democratic movement. First published illegally in Geneva in 1884 and smuggled into Russia, it could only be legally printed inside Russia after the press restrictions loosened following the 1905 Revolution; this 1906 St. Petersburg edition is accordingly the first domestic Russian printing, issued alongside a companion legal edition of "Socialism and the Political Struggle" the same year. The present copy survives in a contemporary composite binding, evidently commissioned by an early owner to protect a text that had spent two decades as underground literature.
