The standard Soviet university textbook on ordinary differential equations, by one of the towering figures of twentieth-century Soviet mathematics. Ivan Georgievich Petrovsky (1901-1973) was a leading specialist in partial differential equations, algebraic geometry, and probability theory, remembered internationally for the Petrovsky lacunas in the theory of hyperbolic equations and for his fundamental work on systems of partial differential equations; from 1951 until his death he served as rector of Moscow State University, overseeing its growth into one of the world's foremost centres of mathematical research. This lecture course, first published in the 1930s and revised through six editions, became the canonical Soviet introduction to the subject, translated into English, German, and other languages and used for decades as the standard text for mechanics-mathematics faculties across the USSR. The book treats first-order equations with geometric interpretation, the general existence theory including Euler polylines, the Arzela theorem, and Peano's method, the theory of linear systems presented through an original canonical form, and an appendix on first-order partial differential equations, with an extensive problem set expanding the material well beyond a bare lecture outline. Its combination of rigor and pedagogical clarity has kept it in print and in active classroom use across multiple generations of Soviet and post-Soviet mathematical education, making it a durable reference point for historians of the Moscow mathematical school and collectors of classic Soviet textbooks.
