Viktor Moiseevich Paneiakh (1930-2017), the foremost Soviet and Russian specialist on the history of kholopstvo, devoted three successive monographs to this subject over the course of nearly two decades, and the present volume is the second in that series, continuing the analysis begun in Kabalnoe kholopstvo na Rusi v XVI v. (Leningrad, 1967) and completed in Kholopstvo v pervoi polovine XVII v. (Leningrad, 1984). Working from both published documents and archival sources - principally the kabalnye knigy (bond registers) and zapisnye knigy (registration books of older bondage documents) - Paneiakh examines the development of kholopstvo across the critical sixteenth century: from the flourishing of polnoe (full, hereditary) and starinnoe (ancient) bondage in their various forms through the legislative watershed of the Ulozhenie of 1597, which dramatically reformed the categories of kholopstvo and attempted to liquidate the institution of dobrovolnaya sluzhba (voluntary service-dependency), through to the state of the institution at the opening of the seventeenth century. The 25 tables of statistical data on bonding transactions across the study period constitute an important archival contribution alongside the analytical chapters. The work was produced at the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences - the principal center for medieval Russian social and legal history in the Soviet period - where Paneiakh spent his entire career as a student of Boris Alexandrovich Romanov, the founder of the Leningrad school of Russian medieval studies. In the broader historiography of Russian social history, Paneiakh's trilogy remains the definitive scholarly treatment of kholopstvo and its relationship to the emergence of full peasant serfdom under the Sobornoye Ulozheniye of 1649.
