Grigol Orbeliani (1804-1883) stands alongside Alexander Chavchavadze and Nikoloz Baratashvili as one of the founding figures of Georgian literary Romanticism, combining a distinguished military career — he rose to the rank of infantry general in Russian imperial service, fighting against the Persians (1826-29) and in the pacification campaigns of Dagestan — with poetry celebrated for its aristocratic elegance, patriotic feeling, and elegiac reflection on the vanished world of the Georgian nobility under Russian rule. His best-known works, including the toast-poem "Sadghegrdzelo" and elegies mourning fellow poets, became staples of the Georgian literary canon. This edition, edited with scholarly notes and a critical essay by Mikheil Zandukeli, appeared in its fifth printing in 1935 as part of Sakhelgami's program of canonizing nineteenth-century Georgian classics for the Soviet reading public, complete with a formal portrait of the poet in military uniform and decorations. The elaborate Art Nouveau-patterned endpapers are characteristic of the higher production standard given to major canonical authors in this series.
