This 1934 Tiflis children's-and-youth imprint presents a novella by Giorgi Nakhutsrishvili illustrated by Elene Akhvlediani (1898-1975), one of the most celebrated Georgian painters and graphic artists of the twentieth century, renowned above all for her luminous cityscapes of Tbilisi and the towns of Georgia. Trained at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts and, from 1922 to 1927, at the Académie Colarossi in Paris, Akhvlediani returned to Georgia in 1927 and worked as a theatrical designer at the Marjanishvili Theater in Kutaisi before establishing herself as a leading figure of Georgian easel painting and book illustration; her graphic work for children's and youth publications of the 1930s remains comparatively little documented outside Georgia, making an illustrated volume of this kind a genuine point of interest for collectors of her work. The novella itself, aimed at an adolescent readership, unfolds against the backdrop of Soviet-era agricultural mechanization, following young Georgian characters through scenes of tractor repair and workshop training under the guidance of a Russian specialist named Vasilev, interwoven with scenes recalling the revolutionary struggles of the Caucasus in the earlier Soviet period - a characteristic pairing, in Georgian children's literature of the early 1930s, of technical-industrial optimism with retrospective revolutionary narrative. Issued by the Children's and Youth Literature Sector of the Georgian state publishing house Sakhelgami, the book survives today with the loss of its spine and all but two of its original color plates, though the text itself is complete. It remains of interest chiefly for its illustrator's association and as a document of Georgian Soviet children's publishing of the period.
