Ivan Ivanovich Meshchaninov (1883–1967) was a prominent Soviet linguist, archaeologist, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1932), and director of the N.Ya. Marr Institute of Language and Thought (1934–1950). He was a founder (with Marr) of the "new theory of language" (Japhetic theory), later distancing himself from Marrism. He authored fundamental works on general linguistics, syntax, Paleoasiatic and Caucasian languages. He was a recipient of the Stalin Prize (1949).
This is the first edition (1948) of a work by Academician Ivan Meshchaninov, a key figure in Soviet linguistics during the Stalinist era. Written at the height of the dominance of Marr's "new theory of language," this monograph explores the category of the verb from a typological perspective, drawing on a wide range of languages including Caucasian, Paleoasiatic, and Indo-European. Published by the USSR Academy of Sciences in an encyclopedic format, it represents a significant, though controversial, chapter in the history of Soviet linguistic thought, reflecting the theoretical debates and institutional power struggles of the period before the 1950 linguistic discussion that condemned Marrism.
