The debut poetry collection of Mir Gholam Reza Mayel Heravi (1922-1996), gathering poems composed between 1949 and 1963 in both classical prosodic forms and the free-verse ("Nima-style") idiom then emerging in Dari poetry, with a preface by the literary figure Mohammad Ismail Moballegh. Born in Herat and trained at Kabul's Teacher Training College, Mayel Heravi worked as a schoolteacher in Herat and Farah before turning to editorial and scholarly work, eventually directing the literary journals "Ariana" and "Ketab-e Khorasan" and establishing himself as one of Afghanistan's foremost bibliographers, manuscript scholars, and historians of the Timurid period and of Herat studies specifically. As a poet, Afghan literary historians count him among the pioneers of Dari free verse, and he has at times been credited as the country's very first practitioner of Nima Yushij-style poetry; several of the free-verse pieces collected here, including "Ruz-e Estalef," "Laleh," and "Khial-e Sepid," had first circulated in the bilingual Pashto-Dari anthology "Nawi Sherune" before their inclusion in this, his own first book. The poems span nearly a decade and a half and are individually dated, with pieces composed in Kabul (1953) and in Herat at the tomb of the fifteenth-century poet Jami (1952), reflecting both his Herat-centered literary formation and his engagement with the wider currents of modern Persian verse. His son, the noted scholar Najib Mayel Heravi, would go on to continue his father's tradition of Herat-focused literary and historical research.
