A striking early Soviet pocket-sized edition of Vladimir Mayakovsky's thematic poetry, published posthumously in 1938. Mayakovsky (1893-1930), the leading figure of the Russian Futurist movement and the most prominent poet of the early Soviet era, wrote extensively on themes of youth, Komsomol (Communist Youth League) mobilization, and revolutionary duty. This specific compilation, "Stikhi o molodezhi" (Poems about Youth), reflects the intense ideological atmosphere of the late 1930s, gathering his most iconic agitational verses aimed at the new Soviet generation, including "Komsomolskaya," "Left March," and "Markov's Shock Brigades." The edition is visually notable for its stark constructivist-inspired red-and-yellow binding adorned with the KIM (Communist International of Youth) emblem, and its inclusion of monumental imagery—most notably an internal graphic of Vera Mukhina's iconic "Worker and Kolkhoz Woman" statue, which had just debuted at the 1937 Paris World's Fair. Despite a moderate print run of 20,000 copies, fragile pocket-sized propaganda books from the Stalinist 1930s were heavily used and rarely survive in such well-preserved condition. It stands as a vivid artifact of Soviet literary politics and book design from the period.
