The first and only edition of the collected works of Anatoly Ivanovich Malcev (1909-1967), the founder of the Siberian school of algebra and mathematical logic and the central figure in twentieth-century Soviet algebra. Malcev graduated from Moscow State University under Kolmogorov, received the State Prize in 1946 for his work on Lie groups and the Lenin Prize in 1964 for applying mathematical logic to algebraic systems. In 1960 he moved to the newly founded Siberian branch of the Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk, where he established the department of algebra and logic, founded the journal Algebra i Logika, and led a seminar that launched Soviet model theory. His name survives in Malcev algebras, the nonassociative generalization of Lie algebras he introduced in 1955, and in the Malcev correspondence between nilpotent Lie groups and Lie algebras that underlies much of later work in nilpotent group theory. Volume I gathers his papers on classical algebra: group theory, ring theory, and the theory of Lie groups. Volume II collects his foundational work in mathematical logic and the general theory of algebraic systems, including the papers that established key results on the compactness of infinite systems of formulas and anticipated directions later developed in Abraham Robinson's nonstandard analysis. Issued nine years after Malcev's death under an editorial board drawn from the top rank of Soviet mathematics, including Kolmogorov, Pontryagin, and Sobolev, the set functions as both a memorial edition and the standard reference text: it is the edition cited throughout the international literature on Malcev algebras and model theory whenever his original papers are referenced. The modest print run of 4,200 copies per volume, standard for a specialist mathematical monograph of this kind, keeps complete matching sets scarce outside university and institute libraries.
