A scarce regional first edition from Soviet Adjara, "Gulizar" is a narrative poema by Nestor Malazonia (1892-1983), a poet and educator from the village of Mamati in Guria who spent most of his working life in Batumi, where he taught, edited, and chaired the regional union of education workers before dedicating himself increasingly to literature; a street in Batumi today bears his name. Malazonia began publishing verse in 1926 and became a member of the Union of Georgian Writers in 1934; "Gulizar," issued here by the Adjaran state press in a modest run of 4,000 copies, belongs to the body of narrative poetry for which the Black Sea coastal region of Adjara served as his enduring poetic muse, alongside his verse collections and his well-known volume of children's poems, "Our Flowers." Adjaran regional imprints of this period are considerably scarcer on the market than equivalent Tbilisi publications, surviving in far smaller institutional and private holdings.
