Maria Ivanovna Maksimova (1885–1973) was a prominent Soviet archaeologist and historian of antiquity, a specialist in the classical archaeology of the Black Sea region. She was a senior researcher at the Institute of the History of Material Culture (later the Institute of Archaeology) of the USSR Academy of Sciences and authored fundamental works on the ancient Greek colonies of the Pontic coast.

This is a fundamental 1956 academic monograph by Maria Maksimova, dedicated to the history, archaeology, and urban development of the major ancient Greek colonies on the southeastern Black Sea coast: Sinope, Amisus (Samsun), and Trebizond (Trabzon). Published by the USSR Academy of Sciences, this richly illustrated work with maps represents a cornerstone of Soviet classical archaeology and Black Sea studies, drawing on extensive archaeological material and historical sources.
