The Literaturnaya Gazeta, organ of the Board of the Writers' Union of the USSR, appeared weekly in 1941 until issue 41 of 15 October, after which the Writers' Union paper did not appear under its own name for three years: from 1942 until late October 1944 it was merged with Sovetskoe iskusstvo and published as Literatura i iskusstvo. It resumed under its original title on 7 November 1944 with Stalin's report on the anniversary of the October Revolution. These three volumes hold every issue under the old title in the war years, 41 for 1941, 8 for 1944 and 52 for 1945. The 1941 volume opens with peacetime numbers and carries No. 25, dated Sunday 22 June, the day of the German invasion, whose pages are still devoted to the Gorky commemoration and the Lermontov centenary. No. 26 prints Molotov's radio speech of 22 June, and No. 27 Stalin's address of 3 July and the decree creating the State Defence Committee. The last issue of the volume, No. 41 of 15 October, is headed "The enemy will be defeated"; it was the last number to appear in 1941, before publication ceased with the evacuation of Moscow, and is scarce. The 1945 volume includes the orders of the Supreme Commander, the Victory issue No. 20 (1131) of 10 May with the act of capitulation, Stalin's address and the decree on Victory Day, the decrees on Stalin as Generalissimo of 30 June, the Potsdam communique of 4 August and Stalin's address on victory over Japan of 8 September. The set comes from the library of the Writers' Union of Georgia, with stamps and consecutive accession numbers on the first issues of the volumes.
