The Ukrainian edition of the second half of Petro Lavrov's study of Cyril and Methodius, issued as number 78 of the series of the Historical-Philological Department of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kyiv in 1928 in 1,200 copies. In the author's foreword, dated 10 June 1928 at the Lavra Cultural-Historical Reserve, Lavrov explains that the first half of his work, the sources preserved in Slavonic, was being published separately by the Slavic Commission of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and thanks the Academy's secretary Ahatanhel Krymsky and the translator P. G. Ivantsev. The book examines the Moravian-Pannonian Lives of Constantine and Methodius, praise-words, services and prologue lives, the account of the translation of books in the Nestor Chronicle, the tale of Chernorizets Khrabar, the Thessalonian legend, the lives of Clement and Naum, the Proglas and the alphabet prayer of Constantine the Presbyter, and traces how Slavonic writing passed from Moravia to Bulgaria. The appendices include the Pannonian Lives in Old Slavonic with a Ukrainian translation, a survey of the Glagolitic and Cyrillic manuscripts such as the Zographensis Gospel, the Ostromir Gospel, Codex Clozianus and the Kyiv Folia, and a bibliography. Facsimile plates reproduce a Serbian prologue manuscript of 1330 and a Glagolitic page of the Zographensis Gospel. This copy carries the stamps of a Georgian library, and it is partly unopened, with a worn and chipped wrapper typical of academy series issued in small runs.
