A scarce posthumous synthesis of the lifetime work of Lev Nikolaevich Soloviev (1898–1967), the founding figure of academic archaeology in Abkhazia and one of the principal Soviet specialists on the Stone Age of the eastern Black Sea littoral. Soloviev had begun his fieldwork in Abkhazia in the 1930s and conducted decades of survey and excavation on the open-air Palaeolithic sites of the Caucasus coastal foothills before his death in 1967; his unpublished manuscripts, drawings, plans and field photographs were preserved in the archives of the D. I. Gulia Abkhazian Institute of Language, Literature and History and brought to publication twenty years later by colleagues at the Tbilisi Metsniereba press. The volume documents the full chronological span of pre-pottery prehistory in Abkhazia: open-air Palaeolithic stations and the new Lower Palaeolithic finds at Western Yashtukh, the major rock-shelter and cave sites of Achmarda, Monakluk, Kep-Bogaz Grotto and the Cold Grotto (Холодный Грот), the Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic occupation of the territory in relation to the Würm-glacial sequence (the Chkhaltinsky-Sochinsky and Klychsky-Chernomorsky stages), and the position of the Abkhaz Mesolithic within the wider Black Sea / Caucasian framework. The exceptionally generous illustrative apparatus of 130 plates, with maps, plans, sections, profiles and detailed lithic typologies, makes the volume the most comprehensive single source for the lower-prehistoric record of Abkhazia. Issued in only 1,000 copies through closed academic distribution by the Georgian Academy of Sciences press in Tbilisi, and severely affected — like most other Sukhumi-related Caucasian-archaeology publications of the late Soviet period — by the destruction of institutional library holdings during the 1992–1993 war, the book is now uncommon outside the major Caucasus-studies libraries and is consulted heavily by Palaeolithic and Mesolithic specialists working on the eastern Black Sea, on Caucasian prehistory and on hominin dispersals into Eurasia.
