Condition: wrapper fair - considerable browning, tears at the staple holes, rubbing and creasing to the corners; text block good - text, step diagrams, and dance notation complete and legible, age-toned low-grade paper typical of provincial printing of the 1930s.

A striking and unusually specific piece of Soviet leisure-culture ephemera: a practical dance manual issued not by a Moscow or Leningrad publisher but by the State Philharmonic Society serving the Caucasian Mineral Waters resort group (Kislovodsk, Essentuki, Zheleznovodsk, Pyatigorsk), the premier network of Soviet spa towns where the vacationing elite of the 1930s - officials, scientists, decorated workers on sanatorium vouchers - took the waters and, evidently, learned to dance. The booklet's numbered diagrams, credited throughout to the dance instructor G. I. Belyaev, teach the tango cortez ending, the side-step croisé (promenade), and combined step-and-chassé sequences in the foxtrot-blues - Western social dances whose status in the USSR fluctuated between official disapproval as "bourgeois" and periodic, closely regulated tolerance at officially sanctioned venues such as resort dansings. Aimed squarely at the practical needs of paying dance-class students rather than at any ideological or educational institution, the pamphlet is a rare survival of everyday Soviet resort entertainment culture at the height of the 1930s spa boom, printed in a run of 5,000 copies at a small regional press and seldom found intact today given its working, disposable character.
