A pedagogical-methodological study by Boris Anastasyevich Kordemsky (1907-1999), the leading Soviet popularizer of recreational mathematics, whose bestselling "Mathematical Puzzles" (Matematicheskaya smekalka) went through numerous editions and print runs in the hundreds of thousands and remains in print in Russia today. Unlike Kordemsky's popular puzzle collections aimed at general readers, the present volume is a professional handbook addressed to teachers, growing directly out of his 1957 kandidat dissertation on extracurricular puzzle problems as a tool for developing mathematical initiative in adolescents and adults. The book surveys the historiography of recreational mathematics problems from classical sources through significant recent works, attempts a systematic classification of puzzle types, and devotes substantial attention to the pedagogical characteristics that make such problems effective: concreteness, inductive reasoning, arousal of interest, accessibility, and polytechnic relevance, closing with a bibliography of further reading for extracurricular mathematical activities. As a methodological guide rather than a puzzle anthology, this scarcer title offers insight into the pedagogical theory underlying the Soviet tradition of mathematical enrichment that produced Kordemsky's far better-known popular works.
