A scarce first monograph by Oksana Ivanovna Kiyanska, subsequently professor at the Russian State Humanitarian University and one of the leading specialists on the Decembrist movement and early nineteenth-century Russian political history. The volume examines one of the most dramatic episodes of the Decembrist uprising: the armed revolt of the Chernigov Infantry Regiment in the Ukraine between 29 December 1825 and 3 January 1826. Following the collapse of the Senate Square revolt in St. Petersburg, the Southern Society - the Decembrist organization led by Pavel Pestel - attempted a second insurrection under Sergei Muraviev-Apostol, who led the Chernigov regiment on a march through the Kyiv region before the force was surrounded and shattered by loyal cavalry. Drawing on new archival materials, including investigative records and the papers of the Southern Society, Kiyanska reconstructs the state of the secret societies on the eve of the revolt, traces the initial stages of the uprising, examines the role of the Kyiv garrison in the insurgents' plans, and analyses the historical inevitability of the southern Decembrists' defeat - their failure to master the dynamics of a genuine soldiers' revolt. The publisher's blurb describes the monograph as the first de-ideologized, strictly documentary study of the Decembrist movement in the context of the history of modern governance models. The volume includes a substantial documentary appendix to each of the four main parts and a full bibliography of primary sources and secondary literature. Published in the first decade after the Soviet archive opening, when Decembrist studies were undergoing fundamental revision.
