Results of the Kvemo Kartli Archaeological Expedition, 1965-1971 is a foundational publication in South Caucasian prehistoric archaeology and one of the most extensively cited Georgian archaeological monographs in international scholarship. The Kvemo Kartli (Lower Kartli) expedition, mounted jointly by the Georgian Academy of Sciences, the S. Janashia State Museum, and Tbilisi State University, investigated the settlements of the Shulaveri-Shomu culture - the earliest Neolithic agricultural society of Georgia and one of the earliest farming cultures of the South Caucasus, dated approximately to the late 7th through early 5th millennium BC. The principal sites excavated include Shulaveris Gora and Khramis Didi Gora in the Khrami River basin, yielding evidence of mud-brick circular architecture, lithic assemblages, ceramic typology, and anthropomorphic figurines that define the Shulaveri-Shomu cultural horizon. The volume is organized in six thematic sections by different authors: Early Farming Settlements (Javakhishvili and Kiguradze), Bronze Age materials (Glonti), Iron Age (Japaridze), Chalcolithic (Avalishvili), Antique Period (Davlianidze), and Feudal Period (Dolaberidze). The 53 plates of black-and-white photographs, drawings, and plans are the primary visual documentation of the Shulaveri-Shomu material and continue to serve as the standard reference in publications on Caucasian Neolithic prehistory internationally, with citations found in Springer archaeological handbooks, Paléorient, and the proceedings of the International Congress of Archaeologists of the Near East.
