A second, critically re-edited printing of Platon Ioseliani's biography of the last king of united Georgia, prepared with a substantial scholarly apparatus by the literary historian Akaki Gatserelia for the series "Georgian Classical Literature: Monographs," a Soviet-era program that returned major works of pre-revolutionary Georgian historical and biographical writing to print under critical editorial supervision. Platon Ioseliani (1809-1875), a graduate of the Tbilisi Theological Seminary and one of the founding figures of nineteenth-century Georgian historiography, devoted much of his scholarly career to the ecclesiastical, archaeological and dynastic history of Georgia. His biography of King Giorgi, known in the traditional Georgian dynastic count as Giorgi XIII and in most English-language scholarship as George XII, first appeared in print in 1893, eighteen years after Ioseliani's own death. Giorgi ruled the united Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti from 1798 until his death in 1800, the last monarch of the centuries-old Bagrationi line before the kingdom's absorption into the Russian Empire. Gatserelia's 1936 edition adds a lengthy introductory study of Ioseliani's life and historiographical significance (pp. XIII-XL), the author's own supplementary notes (pp. 249-277), and an extensive editorial apparatus covering textual questions, unidentified persons named in the narrative, and a bibliography of Ioseliani's writings (pp. 281-305). The volume is illustrated with sixteen inserted plates, including a frontispiece portrait of Ioseliani and reproduced nineteenth-century engraved views of Tbilisi. As a scholarly re-edition of one of the principal primary biographical accounts of Georgia's last king, the volume remains of interest to collectors and researchers of late Bagrationi Georgia and of Soviet-era Georgian historiographical publishing.
