A significant Soviet collected edition of Ibsen's plays in the canonical Russian translations of Anna Vasilievna Hansen (1869-1942) and Peter Gottfried Hansen (1846-1930), the foremost translators of Scandinavian literature into Russian, whose renderings of Ibsen's social dramas remained the standard Soviet-period versions for decades. Henrik Johan Ibsen (1828-1906), the Norwegian playwright generally regarded as the founder of modern realistic drama, had been central to the Russian theatrical repertoire since the 1880s, and his major plays - A Doll's House, Ghosts, An Enemy of the People, Hedda Gabler - were among the most frequently staged and discussed works in Soviet theaters of the 1920s-1930s. The volume is prefaced by a major critical essay by Anatoly Vasilievich Lunacharsky (1875-1933), the first Soviet People's Commissar of Education and the leading cultural theorist of the early Soviet period, whose essay on Ibsen belongs to his important series on Western dramatists. The binding, title page design, half-title illustrations, and original dust jacket were all designed by Dmitrii Isidorovich Mitrokhin (1883-1973), one of the outstanding masters of Russian and Soviet book art: an illustrator, graphic artist, and exlibrist closely associated with the Leningrad school of book culture of the 1920s-1930s, and a figure whose book designs are specifically sought by collectors of Soviet graphic arts. The original Mitrokhin dust jacket is absent from this copy.
