This three-volume "History of Philosophy," published during World War II under the auspices of the Institute of Philosophy of the USSR Academy of Sciences and edited by a team of leading Soviet Marxist philosophers, represents the official Stalinist canon of philosophical history. Known colloquially among students as the "Grey Horse" for its comprehensive content and durable grey covers, it served for decades as the fundamental textbook for Soviet higher education. The third volume, dedicated to German classical philosophy, is exceptionally rare. In 1944, a Central Committee resolution specifically criticized its "shortcomings and errors," leading to the mass confiscation and destruction of copies. This act makes the complete three-volume set, especially with the elusive third volume, a highly sought-after bibliographic rarity and a significant artifact of the ideological control exercised over Soviet academic thought.
