The first Russian edition of Marshall Hall Jr.'s "The Theory of Groups" (Macmillan, 1959), one of the two most influential English-language graduate textbooks on group theory of the mid-twentieth century. Hall, then professor of mathematics at Ohio State University and later a leading figure in American combinatorics, designed the book to serve simultaneously as a teaching text for the first ten chapters and a research-level monograph for the remaining ten, covering topics then at the center of specialist attention. The Soviet translation was entrusted to Lev Arkadievich Kaluzhnin, himself a major figure in Soviet algebra and permutation group theory, best known for his work on wreath products and the Krasner-Kaluzhnin embedding theorem. Kaluzhnin's editorial preface situates Hall's book explicitly against Alexander Kurosh's "Teoriya grupp," the standard Soviet reference on abstract group theory since 1944 and itself translated into German, English, Hungarian, and Japanese: rather than overlapping, the two works were understood by Soviet algebraists as complementary, with Hall covering areas of active theoretical research, such as the Burnside problem, free products with amalgamated subgroups, and the theory of representations and characters, that Kurosh had treated only lightly. The book accordingly filled a specific gap in the Soviet mathematical literature at a moment of intensive activity in Soviet group theory, and remained a standard graduate reference for Soviet algebraists throughout the following decades.
