This 1950 work by Alexey Vladimirovich Efimov, a Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, is a foundational scholarly study of a pivotal era in exploration. The book is a revised and significantly expanded edition of the author's earlier 1948 monograph on Russian expeditions in the Pacific. It provides a comprehensive account of the "heroic campaigns" of Russian frontiersmen, sailors, and naval expeditions that mapped the vast, unknown territories of the Russian Arctic, the Far East, and North-West America during the 17th and first half of the 18th centuries. The narrative covers landmark achievements such as Semyon Dezhnev's voyage through the Bering Strait, the expeditions of Vitus Bering and Alexei Chirikov, and the cartographic work that filled these "blank spots" on the world map. Recognized for his outstanding contributions to geography, Efimov was awarded the prestigious Semyon Dezhnev Prize by the USSR Geographical Society for this and related works. Based on extensive archival documents and cartographic collections, this well-illustrated volume with numerous maps was intended not only for specialists but also for the wider Soviet intelligentsia.
