A scarce second edition of the principal Georgian-language treatise on general phonetics by Giorgi Saridanovich Akhvlediani (1887–1973), the founding figure of modern Georgian linguistic scholarship, full member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences from 1941, founder and long-time head of the Department of General and Comparative Linguistics at Tbilisi State University, and one of the founders of the Caucasian comparative linguistic school. Trained in Saint Petersburg, Paris and Heidelberg in the Indo-European tradition (his early work was on Ossetian historical phonetics, and he produced a foundational descriptive grammar of Iron Ossetic in 1969), Akhvlediani brought to Georgian linguistics a rigorous European philological methodology fused with deep first-hand knowledge of the Kartvelian, Iranian and Northeast Caucasian language families.
