This scholarly catalog, issued by the S. Janashia State Museum of Georgia under the Georgian SSR Academy of Sciences, documents the museum's collection of "dedoplebi" (literally "queens"), the dressed cloth ritual dolls associated with the Caucasus-wide women's spring rain-invoking ceremony known in various Georgian regions as Lazaroba or Gonjaoba, in which a masked or veiled doll - often called simply "the rain doll" - was carried in procession, accompanied by ritual song, to petition for rain during drought. As the foreword makes clear, the collection catalogued here extends well beyond Georgia proper to gather comparable ritual dolls from across the Caucasus: Georgian examples alongside dolls from numerous peoples of Dagestan, as well as Azerbaijani, Armenian, and Pontic Greek material, several shown here cradled in miniature wooden beds or swaddled like infants, and others dressed in elaborate regional folk costume with their faces deliberately marked with a crossed "X" or reduced to buttons and stitching - a characteristic feature of such ritual figures, whose faces were customarily obscured or schematized rather than rendered as portraits. Compiled by Nino Ghoghoberidze and illustrated with sixteen plates of photographs and watercolor renderings, the catalog includes a full descriptive inventory of the dolls with museum accession numbers, together with summaries in Russian and English. A genuinely specialized piece of Soviet Georgian ethnographic scholarship, it is of interest to folklorists, textile and doll historians, and collectors of Caucasus material culture.
