King Vakhtang VI of Kartli (1675-1737) was the central figure of the eighteenth-century Georgian cultural and intellectual revival: ruler, poet, legal codifier, historian, and the founder of the first Georgian printing press, established in Tbilisi in 1709. Among his translations from Persian is "Kalila and Dimna," the celebrated cycle of animal fables that had travelled from the Sanskrit Panchatantra through Ibn al-Muqaffa's eighth-century Arabic version into Persian and thence into Georgian; Vakhtang's rendering was versified and arranged by his court scribe Onana and given final form by his tutor and collaborator Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani. For a century and a half the translation circulated only in manuscript. The present 1886 Tiflis edition is the first printed edition of Vakhtang's version, issued under the patronage of Prince Grigol Gurieli and edited, with a scholarly introductory essay tracing the fable cycle's transmission through Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, and European sources (citing Max Muller and the comparative-mythology scholarship of the day), by the writer and translator Ilia Chqonia, whose own literary career included bringing Pushkin, Lermontov, Krylov, Heine, and Sienkiewicz into Georgian. The volume closes with an errata list and a glossary of archaic and foreign vocabulary for the benefit of contemporary readers unfamiliar with the diction of Vakhtang's era. As the editio princeps of one of the foundational translated texts of Georgian literary history, the book is of considerable interest to collectors and libraries specializing in Georgian literature, translation history, and the cultural legacy of Vakhtang VI's court.
