Konstantin Mikhailovich Simonov (1915–1979), one of the most prominent Soviet writers of the wartime and postwar generations, poet, playwright, journalist, and war correspondent, created “Days and Nights” based on his own experiences as a Pravda correspondent during the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942–1943. The novella, written in the summer of 1943 and first published in 1944, became an immediate classic of Soviet military prose, capturing the daily grind, heroism, and inner world of defenders in the besieged city.
The story centers on Captain Saburov and his company holding a ruined house amid relentless German assaults, blending stark realism of trench life, psychological depth of characters facing death, camaraderie, love, and unyielding duty. Simonov’s restrained yet powerful style, free of excessive propaganda, made the work resonate deeply with frontline soldiers and home-front readers alike, earning it widespread acclaim and multiple adaptations (including a 1943 play and 1943 film by Aleksandr Stolper).
The edition features atmospheric illustrations by Viktor Ivanov (1912–1994), a noted Soviet graphic artist and book illustrator of the 1940s–1950s, known for his dynamic wartime drawings in military and children’s literature.
Published by Voennizdat (Military Publishing House) during the final year of the war, this first separate edition in illustrated softcover is a rare and emblematic artifact of Great Patriotic War literature, wartime morale-boosting publications, and early Simonov bibliography.
