This monumental three-volume set (1955–1961) is the first comprehensive Russian translation of the landmark American reference on experimental nuclear physics, edited by Emilio Segrè (1905–1989), Italian-American physicist, Nobel Prize winner (1959) for the discovery of the antiproton, and one of the leading figures in 20th-century nuclear science. Segrè, who worked on the Manhattan Project and later at Berkeley, assembled contributions from top American physicists to create what became a bible for experimental nuclear research in the postwar era.
The work covers all major areas of experimental nuclear physics as understood in the late 1940s–early 1950s:
Vol. 1: Particle detection methods (G. Staub), passage of radiation through matter (H.A. Bethe and J. Ashkin), nuclear moments and statistics (N.F. Ramsey);
Vol. 2: Nuclear reactions (P. Morrison), neutron physics (B.T. Feld);
Vol. 3: Radioactive decay, nuclear spectroscopy (M. Deutsch, E. Segrè et al.), instrumentation, accelerators, and advanced measurement techniques.
