Egnate Ninoshvili (real name Egnate Ingoroqva, 1857–1894) stands among the most influential Georgian realist writers of the late 19th century, alongside Ilia Chavchavadze and Akaki Tsereteli. Coming from a modest rural background in western Georgia, he became a sharp chronicler of social injustice, poverty, and the exploitation of peasants and urban laborers under tsarist rule. His short stories and novellas — such as “Gogia Uishari”, “Lake of Geri”, “Anisior”, “Kinto”, “Bogoma”, “On the Road” and others — combine documentary-like realism, deep psychological insight, vivid ethnographic detail, and biting social criticism, making him a key figure in the Georgian critical realism movement that paved the way for 20th-century Georgian prose.
This postwar collected edition was edited by Geronti Kikodze (1882–1962), a leading Georgian literary scholar, critic, and translator, known for his meticulous work on 19th-century Georgian classics and his role in shaping Soviet-era interpretations of national literature. Kikodze’s editorial introduction and commentary frame Ninoshvili’s oeuvre within the context of progressive social thought and the struggle against feudal remnants.
